A health coach is going to provide you with some of the additional resources that you need to live a healthy and happy life. You may decide that it makes sense to utilize these professionals to ensure that you meet certain health requirements along the way, such as making changes to your behaviors that will benefit you and others. The sessions often last longer, and you may need to attend several of them, compared to the shorter doctor visits. Since hiring a health coach is an additional health service, many people wonder whether health coaches are covered by insurance.

Most health insurance providers will not cover the benefit of hiring a health coach, explains CurateMD Skin Bar and Wellness Clinic. Many places, like CurateMD Skin Bar, will offer specials from time to time, however. While there are many reasons to choose to work with a health coach to help improve your overall health and well-being, most plans will not provide coverage for this, and you must pay out of pocket. There are a few exceptions, so check with your own health insurance policy ahead of time to see whether you can get these services covered or not.

Whether or not your health insurance will cover the work for a health coach can help you decide if utilizing these services makes sense for you. Let’s take a closer look at some of the services that these health coaches can offer you!

Will My Insurance Company Pay for a Health Coach?

There are a number of benefits to choosing to work with a health coach. They will work with you to help change some of your current behaviors to help them become healthier. While a doctor can help give you recommendations to lose weight, exercise more, and eat a healthy diet, they are often rushed for time and can’t give you the tools you need to get this done.

A health coach, on the other hand, will be educated on the right processes to use with science in order to help you make some of those changes. But in many cases, your insurance company will not pay for you to visit with a health coach.

There are a number of reasons for this. In many cases, anyone can be considered a health coach, even though the National Consortium for Credentialing Health & Wellness Coaches is working to make a change to this and make sure that anyone who says they are a health coach has the right credentials. Without proof of credentials, many health insurance companies may find it difficult to pay for the services.

There are some exceptions to this, though. Some insurance companies will pay for a health coach, and some will do it depending on the situation or the reason that you plan to go to the health coach in the first place. You should check with your insurance provider to see what they will cover and what isn’t covered if you would like to visit with a health coach.

How Much Does a Health Coach Cost?

Since it is likely that you will need to pay for the cost of a health coach on your own, you may wonder how much it is going to cost for you to visit with one of these professionals. Most health coaches are going to charge between $45 to $110 per session, depending on their certifications and years of experience. You will usually need to do between 5 to 7 sessions with them, each one lasting between 30 to 60 minutes in total. This can add up to almost $800 to see a health coach, but you can shop around and see which one will be right for you.

It is important to go on several visits in order to make sure that you are able to see real results. A health coach is working with you to change up some of your behaviors around your health. This is not something that you can do in just a few minutes or one short session. You need to take the time to work on this, and a few sessions with a good health coach can help. But make sure that you can afford the sessions before you decide that this professional is right for you.

Choosing to Hire a Health Coach

If you have decided that you need a health coach for some of your health needs, then it is time to take a look at your insurance plan and see whether you can get some or all of these services covered. If you have a typical health insurance plan, though, these services will not be covered, and you must determine whether the services are worth the benefit for you to pay out of pocket. Considering the big changes these health coaches can make in your life, it may be worth it for you to work with one.
