Have you ever wondered what a florist does with all the unsold flowers? You may think that they just get trashed. What a cheap way to get flowers, out the dumpster. That is not the case though.

According to Violet’s Florist, my favorite florist in the Upper East Side, there are actually a few things that florists do with all the old flowers. Let’s go over them below.

How Long Do Flowers Last?

Before we get into the information about where the old flowers go you must know that the lifetime of a flower that has been cut does not last very long. Just about all cut flowers last about ten days on average. No one wants a poor looking flower. Plus, when you buy a flower you would like to see it pretty and lively for at least a week.

Note: Fresh cut flowers do not last long. A florist must plan carefully.

Where Do They Go?

Anyone like a good discount. You guessed it. You can get discounts on flowers too. A florist will usually discount flowers that are starting to expire. You can get a fairly good discount the older the flower it too.

Just know that the flower is about to expire and that is why it has been marked down. This helps the florist get the flowers sold while still making a small profit and not completely throwing the flowers out.

Who Likes Free Stuff?

If you are like most people, you like free stuff. Well, some florists cannot stand to see things go to waste. A florist can sometimes just give away any old flowers. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are in bad shape, they might just not last as long. So, to answer the question, they give them away. That is not always the case so bear with me.

Note: Most of the time the free flowers will go to the most loyal customers. It is a way of saying thanks and just not throwing the flowers out. If free flowers were given to just anyone and everyone the florist would probably never make a profit and become used for free flowers in the end. So, the loyal customer normally gets it.

Can’t The Florist Just Donate?

Acts of kindness such as giving flowers away to nursing homes or hospitals is one way that a florist may choose to get rid of all unsold flowers. This can brighten someone’s day all while giving back a little. Like stated above, the flowers are not in bad shape they may not last as long.Donations are a great way to distribute the flowers without wasting them. PLus it gives the chance to make someone else’s day.

Did You Know That Old Flowers Can Be Used As Compost?

When a flower dies you can take that flower and add it to your flower bed. It can be used as a compost. This brings all the nutrients for the next flowers that are growing. By using old flowers as a compost you are not only saving money but helping the environment. A florist will often use all of their unsold flowers for compost.

Is It Time To Learn?

Did you know that all the unsold flowers can be used as a teaching tool? A florist can take the old flowers and teach a new employee or upcoming florist on care and how to cute flowers properly. Besides, you would not want to teach someone how to cut flowers and accidentally mess up your good flowers, would you?

Extend The Life.

The best way to deal with old flowers is to not have them. There are a few things that florist do to eliminate the problem. For one they only buy what they know they can sell. This is great after you are used to your normal influx of customers. The second is how to cut them and always keeping them in a cold environment.

Tips On How To Keep Flowers Fresh.

  • Cut the stems at an angle.
  • Remove any extra leaves or foliage.
  • Add Cold Water every day.
  • A couple of ice cubes everyday work great.
  • Do not overload your vase. Flowers need room to grow. In this case, live.
  • Add some flower food.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
